The Yellow Team originated as Team Metro Mart in 1997 after Mickaela was first diagnosed with breast cancer. We gathered sponsors and purchased booth space where we could distribute resource information about trials, treatment and any organizations we could learn about. Cakes by Karen, longtime family friend provided big pink sheet cakes that we would hand out at the booth to anyone passing by who wanted some.
After we lost Mickaela in 2001 and started the Foundation, we converted Team Metro Mart into a walking team. The Yellow t-shirts actually evolved from an idea in 1999 where we dressed everyone (about 25 or so people) in yellow so we could find each other in the crowds.
In 2001 we recruited 62 men women and children to join us as the first Mickaela Foundation Yellow Team. We were a small but mighty group laughing and celebrating the lives of those we lost, had just met, and those we would save throughout the upcoming years. Little did we know how big this would become. We were just getting started!
The photos below are of The Pre-Race Rally & Race Day. We hosted The Pre-Race Rally the Friday before the race where we would hand out the Yellow Team t-shirts and Race info packets.
Looking back on these pictures now, it is amazing how many of the same people have been there with us since the beginning. Families that have made this event an annual tradition. Watching the children grow up through the years and become such great activists for change in their community.
Thank you to the Haberer, Brown, West, Smith, Fieghner & Hank families and of course, Karen and Tracy at Cakes by Karen and Mile High Harley-Davidson.
We could not have done it without you!
